- 1 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 4 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- additional sugar (optional)

In a large bowl, cream the butter and then add the sugar. Mix until well combined and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in molasses. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and salt in a medium bowl; gradually add to creamed mixture. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until dough is easy to handle.

Roll into 1-in. balls; roll in the additional sugar (if desired). Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 8-12 min. or until puffy and lightly browned. Cool for 1 min. before moving to wire racks. If desired, powdered sugar can be sprinkled on top. Makes 11 doz.
